It isn&#8217;t the best system, but it&#8217;s the system we&#8217;ve got. Well, not if Apple can do anything about it. Passkeys are a new system that automatically signs you in to online services using your phone&#8217;s Face ID (or Touch ID) or your computer&#8217;s password. It&#8217;s one less thing to remember; it works without fiddling around with a password manager.<\/p>\n<p>Passkeys aren&#8217;t an Apple-exclusive feature. You can bet the technology will be supported no matter what devices you have because <a href=\"https:\/\/fidoalliance.org\/members\/\" data-lasso-id=\"302325\">all of these companies<\/a> are part of the FIDO Alliance that created the system &#8230; <em>eventually<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Apple fully supports it <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/passkeys\/\" data-lasso-id=\"302326\">in iOS 16 and Safari 16 for Mac<\/a>, as does <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/chrome\/answer\/13168025\" data-lasso-id=\"335310\">Google&#8217;s Chrome browser<\/a> on multiple platforms. Android 9 and above <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.android.com\/training\/sign-in\/passkeys\" data-lasso-id=\"335311\">supports passkeys via Credential Manager<\/a>, and Google added passkey support to user accounts on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/814951\/google-passkeys-biometric-security-passwords\/\" data-lasso-id=\"335312\">all major platforms<\/a>.\u201d Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/security\/identity-protection\/passkeys\/?tabs=windows%2Cintune\" data-lasso-id=\"1641771061\">added support to Windows 11<\/a> in the 22H2 update.<\/p>\n<p>Follow along as I show you how passkeys work.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>How to use passkeys<\/h2>\n<p>Device support is one thing, but you also need to have an account on a website that uses passkeys. 1Password has a list at <a href=\"https:\/\/passkeys.directory\/\" data-lasso-id=\"302329\">passkeys.directory<\/a> where you can see every website that is known to support it \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lKie-vgUGdI\" data-lasso-id=\"302330\">all 225 of them<\/a>, at the time of writing.<\/p>\n<p>Some notable ones include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/834827\/amazon-moves-away-from-passwords-to-passkeys-instead\/\" data-lasso-id=\"1641376642\">Amazon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/news\/apple-websites-start-implementing-passkeys-in-place-of-passwords\" data-lasso-id=\"1641771062\">Apple<\/a>, Best Buy, Google, eBay, Microsoft, Nintendo, PayPal, PlayStation and Snapchat. Below the \u201cHow you sign in to Google\u201d section, tap <strong>Passkeys<\/strong>. You\u2019ll have to tap <strong>Create a passkey<\/strong> and tap\u00a0<strong>Continue<\/strong>. A system dialog will come up where you\u00a0tap\u00a0<strong>Continue<\/strong> again and your phone will ask for Face ID (or Touch ID). It\u2019s an alternative way of signing in that\u2019s faster, safer and easier to manage.<\/p>\n<p>The next time you sign in, you can tap &#8220;Turn on&#8221;. Griffin Jones\/Cult of Mac<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I wanted to try creating a passkey on a different website to see if it&#8217;s the same process. After creating a Best Buy account, I wasn&#8217;t <em>asked<\/em> to create a passkey, but I could find the option hidden in account settings.<\/p>\n<p>Tap\u00a0<strong>Create a Passkey<\/strong> and you get the same system prompt. Tap\u00a0<strong>Continue<\/strong>, make sure your face still looks like your face and you&#8217;re all done.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"unsupported\">Sign into an account with passkeys on a computer that doesn&#8217;t support it<\/h3>\n<p>Am I locked out of my eBay and beloved new Best Buy account on computers that don\u2019t support passkeys?<\/p>\n<p>No. Enabling passkeys doesn\u2019t eliminate passwords, it\u2019s just an easier way to sign in on devices that you&#8217;ve activated it on. When I go to ebay.com, I can still sign in using my password.<\/p>\n<p>You also don&#8217;t need your Mac to run the latest version of macOS to use it because Safari can be updated separately in <strong>System Preferences &gt; Software Update<\/strong>. It feels wrong that this is far safer than a password \u2014 it feels like things need to be inconvenient to be safe. It couldn&#8217;t get any easier.<\/p>\n<p>But people inevitably use the same password for nearly every account they have, because how in the world are you supposed to keep more than ten unique alphanumeric passwords in your head?<\/p>\n<p>Password managers are a decent stop-gap solution that quickly devolves into a storage problem with passwords not updating, passwords kept here but not there, and fiddling around with an app for way too long just to get into a dumb website.<\/p>\n<p>I can only hope that I will be able to live in the glorious password-free future that awaits us for at least a couple of years before I die.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: We originally published this article on December 8, 2022.
