But if you\u2019ve ever had to copy a password out of the system to enter on a different computer, you had to dig through Settings \u2014 if you could even figure out how. The functionality discouraged a lot of people from using Apple&#8217;s password manager. It&#8217;s easy to find in iOS 18, thanks to a dedicated Passwords app you can put on your Home Screen.<\/p>\n<p>The time of using the same password on all your internet accounts is over. Apple\u2019s password manager is free, syncs everywhere (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/icloud-windows\/manage-passwords-icwa812f1681\/icloud\" data-lasso-id=\"1641591016\">even with Windows PCs<\/a>) and is incredibly easy to use. It creates strong passwords and automatically fills them in so you never need to.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how it works.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>How to use the Apple Passwords app<\/h2>\n<p>The standalone Apple Passwords app is new in <a href=\"https:\/\/cultofmac.com\/ios-18\/\" data-lasso-id=\"1641611612\">iOS 18<\/a> \u2014 available now in <strong>Settings &gt; General &gt; Software Update<\/strong>. The update will work with any device currently running iOS 17. If you\u2019re running an older version of iOS, most of the content of this article is similar \u2014 but instead of opening the Passwords app, you\u2019ll go to <strong>Settings &gt; Passwords<\/strong>. Go to Settings and tap on your name at the top. You should see your own personal email at the top. Using the<\/span> iPhone autofill email address<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feature can help you streamline this process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not signed in to your Apple Account or don\u2019t have one yet, you should create one \u2014 it\u2019s free. Griffin Jones\/Cult of Mac<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After updating to iOS 18, you\u2019ll have a new <strong>Passwords<\/strong> app. If you\u2019ve removed it from your Home Screen, you can find it in the Utilities folder of the App Library, or search for it in Spotlight by swiping down on the Home Screen. You\u2019ll need to authenticate with Face ID (or Touch ID) to open the app.<\/p>\n<p>Your stored passwords are organized into smart categories, to help you find what you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Search<\/strong> at the top to find something quickly. Look up an account by user name, website or service name. (You can\u2019t search by password.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>All<\/strong> is all of your saved passwords.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Passkeys<\/strong> are accounts that have a passkey, which is a password-free way of signing in. Every entry has a saved user name, password and website.<\/p>\n<p>Copy a password by tapping and holding on the <strong>Password<\/strong> field and selecting\u00a0<strong>Copy Password<\/strong>. You can also tap and hold to copy your user name. Griffin Jones\/Cult of Mac<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you changed your password and you want to make sure the saved version is up to date, tap\u00a0<strong>Edit<\/strong>.\u00a0Bear in mind that changing the password saved in the Passwords app doesn\u2019t change the <em>actual<\/em> password you use to sign in. The Passwords app is like a digital notebook \u2014 it\u2019s a safe copy, but not the real thing. You want to make sure it matches the password that signs you in.<\/p>\n<p>You also can add notes to help you find the entry later, if perhaps the website URL isn\u2019t obvious or doesn\u2019t match the name of the service. Type in the website URL, user name and password. It\u2019ll automatically save it to Apple Passwords, including the website and user name.<\/p>\n<p>Some websites have weird password restrictions \u2014 you can\u2019t use special characters like hyphens, or they need to be a certain number of characters. If you need to change the suggested password, tap on the password field and tap\u00a0<strong>Customize Strong Password<\/strong>, above the keyboard. Tap\u00a0<strong>Fill Password<\/strong> to autofill it.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to bring up the keyboard to sign in using a different account, tap the Keyboard icon on the left. Griffin Jones\/Cult of Mac<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Apple Passwords app lets you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultofmac.com\/842356\/share-passwords-iphone\/\" data-lasso-id=\"1641591026\">share and sync passwords with your entire family<\/a>. That means you won\u2019t need to let everyone know when you change a shared password, or ask someone to send you an authentication code.<\/p>\n<p>To share a password, open the <strong>Passwords<\/strong> app. Below, you\u2019ll see your shared password groups. Tap <strong>+ New Group<\/strong> to create one.<\/p>\n<p>Give the group a name, like \u201cFamily Passwords.\u201d Tap <strong>+ Add People<\/strong> and look up one or more contacts you\u2019d like to put in the group. Tap <strong>Create<\/strong> when you\u2019ve got everyone. You also can tap <strong>Notify via Messages<\/strong> to let your group members know you gave them direct access.<\/p>\n<p>You should now see the group you just created. Tap the <strong>+<\/strong> in the toolbar to add passwords you want to share with everyone in the group.
