Then you can ask ChatGPT to explain what you’re looking at, do a reverse image search to find products and look things up visually, get information on a business as you walk down the street, quickly add events to your calendar and identify plants and animals.

With the release of iOS 18.4, Apple added the capability to use Visual Intelligence on iPhone 15 Pro models. Here’s how it works.

How to use Visual Intelligence

Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature integrates real-world awareness into iOS, using AI to make your iPhone smarter about what it sees. Capable of recognizing objects, text and scenes through the camera, it unlocks new ways to interact with information instantly and intuitively.

While Visual Intelligence relies heavily on third parties like ChatGPT and Google, its integration into the iPhone makes it a powerful tool for everyday use. Apple’s new AI tool puts those incredibly useful information sources directly at your fingertips.

However, you will need the right combo of hardware and software. You need a device that supports Apple Intelligence. That means an iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro model running iOS 18.2 or later. It also works with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16e running iOS 18.4 or later. However, since neither of them comes with a Camera Control, you’ll need to activate Visual Intelligence via the device’s Action button.

Table of contents: How to use Visual Intelligence on the iPhone 16

Update iOS and enable Apple Intelligence

Click and hold the Camera Control

Add it to the Action button or Control Center

Look things up by snapping a picture

Capture calendar events and look up businesses

Identify plants

How does Visual Intelligence work?

More Apple Intelligence features

Update iOS and enable Apple Intelligence

The first Apple Intelligence features became available in iOS 18.1. When it lists three different plants, it often has the correct one somewhere in the list — but unless it’s labeled, you can’t be sure which. Not to mention, if it’s labeled, you likely won’t need to use the feature in the first place.

Tapping on a plant brings up information from Wikipedia. Tap again to open the full article with details.

How does Visual Intelligence work?

Technically speaking, none of these Visual Intelligence features are super-smart. ChatGPT and Google Reverse Image Search are both third-party services. Pulling information out of the iPhone camera like events and phone numbers is based on Live Text, a feature the iPhone has had for years. And Visual Intelligence does not use AI to do much when identifying businesses; it’s mostly using the iPhone’s GPS and compass with Apple Maps — any iPhone can do that.

Even the new plant identification feature isn’t entirely new. Open Photos, search for “plant,” bring up a picture and swipe up — you’ll see a little info tag where you can look up the photographed plant. This feature works on all older devices running iOS 17.

However, in practice, they’re still useful, practical features. It’s handy being able to access Live Text and visual look-up with a special interface, without the need to save a photo to your library. I think if Apple Intelligence wasn’t a big marketing and branding push, Apple would be more upfront about this being a convenient repackaging of different third-party services, rather than framing it as a new AI technology.

More Apple Intelligence features

How to use Apple Intelligence writing tools

Remove an object from a photo with Apple Intelligence

Hands-on with the first 10 Apple Intelligence features

How to get Apple Intelligence features early — and in the EU

We originally published this article on Visual Intelligence on December 10, 2024.
